Measles, once a common childhood illness, is now largely preventable thanks to effective vaccines. However, outbreaks continue to occur, highlighting the importance of timely and complete childhood immunization. This blog post will discuss the significance of measles vaccination and provide essential information for parents.
Measles: A Growing Concern
While the UK has a high vaccination rate, there have been occasional outbreaks of measles in recent years. These outbreaks often occur in communities with low vaccination rates. It is important to stay up-to-date on the measles situation in your area and to ensure that your child receives all recommended vaccinations.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through the air. Symptoms typically include:
High fever
Cough
Runny nose
Watery eyes
Red, blotchy rash
While most cases of measles resolve on their own, complications can be severe, especially in young children and those with weakened immune systems. These complications may include pneumonia, encephalitis, and even death.
The Importance of the MMR Vaccine
The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) is highly effective at preventing measles. It has minimal side effects, making it a safe choice for protecting your child. Unfortunately, the uptake of the MMR vaccine has declined in recent years, leaving more children vulnerable to this serious and sometimes fatal disease.
The MMR vaccine is administered in two doses:
The first dose is given at 12 months.
The second dose is provided at 18 months.
If your child is not up to date with their vaccinations, please contact your GP. Also, familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of measles, so you can act quickly if you suspect your child might be infected.
5 Steps to Prevent Measles
To protect children and prevent the spread of measles, here are five important steps:
Encourage vaccination: Ensure all parents are aware of the importance of the MMR vaccine and that their children are up to date.
Raise awareness: Educate staff and parents about the signs and symptoms of measles.
Record vaccination status: Keep accurate records of the vaccination status of all children in your care.
Staff vaccinations: Ensure that all staff members are up to date with their MMR vaccines.
Immediate action: If you become aware of a child with measles in your setting, immediately contact the South London Health Protection team at 0344 326 2052.
